After a long day, the first thing you want to do is kick off your shoes and relax in the comfort of your own home. Wouldn’t it be nice if you had your own special spot where you could clear your head and shrug off the stress?
You can – and it can be as simple as designating any corner in the house a “relaxation station.”
It’s All About Location
The only way you’ll be able to decompress is if you’re in the right space. Because it’s so important to take a little “me” time to relax, let your imagination wander, and rejuvenate your brain, finding prime real estate in your house should be your main focus. Many people simply choose a corner of your bedroom, a guest room or a home office (but be careful about choosing your home office – you might find your relaxation station a little too tempting when you need to get things done).
The key? Finding someplace you’re unlikely to be bothered for at least 10 minutes.
Sit Down, Kick Back, and Relax
Every relaxation station needs a comfortable chair, lounger or cushion. Choose just about anything that makes you feel like all is right in the world, from grandma’s old rocker to a bean bag you’ve pirated from the kids’ playroom.
Breathing Life into Your Space
It’s essential to have something that lowers stress in close proximity, so most experts suggest a small fish tank (people who simply watch fish enjoy lower blood pressure than those who don’t). Not into having aquatic pets? Get a plant. An indoor bamboo plant is a great choice. If you don’t have a green thumb, think about plants that are tough to kill, such as Creeping Charlie, a ZZ plant or a watermelon peperomia.
Aromatherapy
You don’t have to be in a spa to enjoy the benefits of aromatherapy. In fact, you don’t even have to use real aromatherapy with essential oils – just lighting a scented soy candle can help you relax and shake off whatever ails you. Lavender and vanilla both contribute to a calm environment, and cinnamon is well-known for its soothing properties.
