It looks like the latest trend in recycling has moved into the lavatory – Orbital Systems, which holds the Certified Space Technology designation from the U.S. Space Foundation, has designed a shower that cuts out between 80 and 95 percent of the water we typically use.
The catch? There really isn’t one, at least according to Forbes.
What is the OrbSys Shower System?
The OrbSys shower system is a closed-loop plumbing outfit that uses about 1.5 gallons of water to give you a 10-minute shower. The system cycles water back through after it hits the drain, purifying it and removing contaminants.
The average family uses about 40 gallons of water each day on showers.
According to Orbital Systems, it might be a while before their system is available to everyday consumers – they’re first offering them to hotels, health and sports clubs, and healthcare facilities – but for now, there are plenty of other ecologically friendly, water-saving measures you can build into your new custom home in Middle Tennessee.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, a standard showerhead uses around 2.5 gallons of water every minute. The EPA says that the average family can save up to 2,900 gallons of water each year by installing WaterSense showerheads – and that leads to saving and energy costs as well. The less water you use, the less water you have to heat.
The truth is, you don’t have to give up water pressure to have a low-flow showerhead (and typically, that’s one of the biggest concerns homebuyers have). You can build ecologically friendly, energy cost-friendly right into your brand new home and you won’t even notice that it’s conserving water.
